An Interview with: Laura Peterson

10/09/2019Jordan Dean

Laura Peterson is a professional actress from Hull, East Yorkshire, who has worked on a number of projects with us at Fishbulb Films. Laura has worked both in theatre and in film over the years and began her relationship with Fishbulb when she was cast as Elisabeth in The Nail That Sticks Out, a role which saw her nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Midlands Movies Awards in 2019.

Q: How did you get started in acting?

A: I got into acting from a love of being on stage since primary school. I went on to do performance studies at college (which was difficult for a 16-year-old introvert who desperately tried to be cool). I went on to do a joint degree in Drama & English before then getting accepted into a drama school in New York.

Q: Can you give us some background on the work you’ve done over the years?

A: I’ve had more work in theatre over the years. Specifically novel adaptations, classics, and Shakespeare. Some of my credits include Great Expectations, It’s a Wonderful Life, Dark Winter, As You Like It, Hamlet, The Seagull and a one-woman show I worked on this year called Abyss.

Q: What drew you to acting?

A: As a kid, I was always inspired by performance, and if it wasn’t acting or dancing, it was show jumping or football. I secretly loved being the centre of attention, but I was also very shy (and still am in certain situations). I found the stage a lure, and it enabled me to transform and express myself despite feeling like an awkward human being. Now performing has become something more transcendental and I get a kick out of telling a really good story.

Q: How did you get involved with working with Fishbulb?

A: I went to sixth form with Jordan and after going on our own separate journeys post-college, he reached out and asked me to audition for Elisabeth in The Nail some 8 years later.

Q: Can you tell us more about the projects you’ve been involved with through FishBulb?

A: The Nail was my first experience with Fishbulb and I was so impressed with the level of professionalism and care the team put into the project. It was a really efficient schedule and everyone involved soared in their own talents.

Shy Gas Man was something I approached Fishbulb with in collaboration with actor Mike Kinsey & playwright Gill Adams. We were faced with numerous problems out of anyone’s control on the day of shooting, but everybody on set took this with great ease and we managed to create something awesome.

Healthy DMU was another great experience with Fishbulb. Efficiency and care was something that I recognised again working with this team. Jordan was great to work with from an actor’s POV. He’s incredibly sensitive and encouraging making it safe to explore and get creative.

Burning Books was just super fun. The ladies cast alongside me just had me cracking up all day and the team were really on board with having a laugh which I think is so important when you’re trying to create. Especially in something like this project which layers comedy into its quite relevant message.

Q: What is it like working with Fishbulb?

A: Fishbulb make it really easy for you. You don’t have to worry about anything other than what it is you need to focus on. And that’s because overall they’re incredibly good at what they do!

Q: Are you working on anything at the moment?

A: I have been working on the one-woman show Abyss which had it’s debut at the Petersfield Shakespeare Festival this summer 2019, but we have plans for it ahead into 2020.

Q: What are your aspirations for the future?

A: I try to remain quite present, but I do hope to continue to grow artistically synonymous with my life as a human being. (And of course, do some really beautiful, groundbreaking TV, film & theatre projects along the way).

Q: Are there any standout moments that come to mind when working with Fishbulb?

A: There’s many! But one moment stands out when I did a little pump during a scene and it was a domino effect of giggling until everyone was in quite a fit and what’s really great (imagine my subtext here) is they have that footage somewhere!

We do have that footage, here it is below!
