In October 2019 we were approached by the marketing team at Curve to create a TV advertisement for the theatre’s production of West Side Story.

The trailer gives you a snippet of everything and audience can expect to see from the stage show; a story about two rival gangs, a controversial love story and amazing song and dance numbers.
We worked closely with the director of the stage production Nikolai Foster and choreographer Ellen Kane to make sure the same passion and energy is on display.
West Side Story TV Advert
Filming the advert took place in a car park in Leicester city centre, using the car park’s industrial features to help portray the image of a gang ravaged 1950s New York city. On the day of filming our lighting crew, Daniel and Lawrence, set up with 4 Aputure C300 LED lights and a Kino Flo to light the dance numbers, followed by opening shots featuring the two gangs. The shoot commenced with our crane op, Dan sweeping over the group of dancers a number of times to get as much coverage as possible for the edit. We then followed this up with Mbili; our steadicam operator getting the opening shots of the advert and a few more close up dance shots.

The post-production process was a great display of editor, Dan Flanders’ skillset, to create the TV Advert of this quality. We worked with Curve’s feedback on the advert and submitted the advert to Clearcast and then ITV for approval. The advert first aired in December 2019, during Corrie.

Behind The Scenes:
The feedback we’ve received for the advert has been immense, with great excitement not only from the Curve’s team but also members of the public and other clients. We’re happy with how it came out, and it even got a second run date in December, as Curve wanted another version with reviews of the production on it.
Do you have any ideas you’d like to chat with us about? We’re happy to talk through any projects you have in mind.
